A massive humiliation hits Mamata Banerjee in West Bengal as 60 of her own TMC MLAs openly revolt against her handpicked choice, leaving the embarrassed leader with just 20 loyalists in a crushing blow to her absolute control

A profound internal crisis has rocked the foundations of the Trinamool Congress (TMC). In a dramatic turn of events, 60 elected Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) have openly rebelled against the party central command, refusing to accept Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as the party's designated Leader of the Opposition (LoP). Instead of falling in line with the leadership's choice, this massive rebel faction has stepped forward to back Ritabrata Banerjee—an MLA who was recently expelled from the party.

This sudden and widespread mutiny has triggered an immediate political emergency inside the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, creating severe uncertainty and raising serious doubts about the absolute control that Mamata Banerjee historically held over her legislative ranks.
The simmering tension erupted into public view on Wednesday, 3rd May, when Ritabrata Banerjee arrived at the Assembly premises. He was not alone; he was accompanied by a prominent group of legislators, including Arup Roy, Shiuli Saha, and Akhruzzaman. Upon their arrival, the group submitted a formal joint letter to Assembly Speaker Rathindra Bose. This document carried the signatures of 59 rebel MLAs, all officially proposing that Ritabrata Banerjee be recognized as the true Leader of the Opposition.
Members of this dissenting group are now openly claiming that they represent the "real" Trinamool Congress, pointing out that the overwhelming majority of the party's lawmakers have shifted allegiance to their side. Confirming the internal shift, TMC MLA Mustafizur Rahman stated publicly that he had personally signed the joint letter. Meanwhile, fellow legislator Sabina Yasmin indicated that the group is planning to hold a formal meeting in the near future to officially elect their choice for the Leader of the Opposition.

This massive defection has completely altered the balance of power within the legislative party. With 60 out of the party's 80 total MLAs choosing to reject the decision made by the top leadership, the faction loyal to Mamata Banerjee has been reduced to a minority of just 20 MLAs in the Assembly. Despite this aggressive pushback against the high command's decisions, the rebel camp is attempting to avoid a total break from their traditional roots. They have explicitly stated that Mamata Banerjee will continue to lead the party as a whole, and they explicitly named her as the party president within the formal letter delivered to the Speaker.
From a legal standpoint, the sheer size of the rebellion shields the dissenting lawmakers from immediate disqualification. Because 60 out of the 80 total TMC MLAs have aligned with the rebel camp, they command more than a two-thirds majority of the party’s total legislative strength. Under the provisions of the anti-defection law, this means that if a formal split takes place, the rebel MLAs will not lose their seats or membership in the house. This legal safety net gives the group the freedom to either establish themselves as an entirely new political party or choose to merge with an existing political entity.

Deep Roots of the Conflict Over the Legislative Appointment
The roots of this current rebellion trace directly back to the fierce controversy surrounding how Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay was selected for the plum post of Leader of the Opposition. Rebel MLAs Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha brought heavy allegations against the party's process, claiming that the signatures of multiple lawmakers were forged or utilized without their explicit consent on the official document that had been submitted to the Speaker to clear Chattopadhyay’s appointment.
Following these heavy accusations, the duo lodged a formal complaint directly with the Assembly secretariat. The secretariat acted quickly on the matter, registering an official police case which was subsequently handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for a deep forensic investigation. Providing an update on the legal proceedings, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari revealed that investigators have actively collected signature samples from the MLAs whose names were attached to the disputed document. He noted that several of those legislators explicitly informed the CID investigators that they had never signed the paperwork in question.

Leadership Responds by Wiping the Organizational Slate Clean
Faced with an existential threat to its authority, the TMC leadership launched a massive counter-offensive today by taking the extreme step of dissolving every single organizational committee across the entire state of West Bengal. Alongside this total shutdown of local operations, the high command announced that it would force the party through a sweeping, top-to-bottom period of internal review, objective performance analysis, and strict organizational assessment.
The party officially broke the news to the public via a statement on X, writing: "After careful consideration, it has been decided that all committees of the All India Trinamool Congress in West Bengal, as well as all its frontal organisations, shall stand dissolved with immediate effect."
Elaborating further on the drastic measures being taken to contain the political fallout, the TMC leadership added: "The party will undertake a comprehensive exercise of introspection, performance review and organisational assessment at every level. Based on the findings of this exercise, the organisational structure of the parent body and all frontal organisations will be reconstituted and announced in due course. The party remains committed to strengthening its organisation and preparing it to meet future challenges with renewed vigour and purpose."

Extreme Measures and Open Defiance of Top Leadership
This total organizational shutdown follows a series of swift punishments meted out just days prior. Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha were officially expelled from the TMC on June 1, a direct retaliation by the high command after the two lawmakers raised their public objections over the LoP selection process and took the fight to the Speaker's office with their forgery complaints. At the time of their ouster, the party hierarchy accused them both of engaging in severe anti-party activities and revoked their primary memberships with immediate effect.
Far from backing down after his expulsion, Ritabrata Banerjee doubled down on his criticisms, publicly claiming that the traditional political party has been completely "hijacked" by the corporate political consultancy firm, the Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC).
These rapidly unfolding events expose a massive, structural fault line deep within the Trinamool Congress. The crisis makes it undeniably clear that an enormous section of the party's elected lawmakers are no longer willing to accept the top-down leadership of Abhishek Banerjee, choosing instead to openly challenge his authority and rally their collective political strength behind the defiant banner of Ritabrata Banerjee.
