"सरकार तुम्हारी है, सिस्टम तो हमारा है": Rahul Gandhi triggered a major Lok Sabha row during the NEET debate by making “student, idiot and andhbhakt” comments, sparking sharp objections from Kiren Rijiju before the remarks were expunged in New Delhi

The lower house of the Indian Parliament experienced a high-voltage session on Wednesday as intense verbal clashes broke out during deliberations on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026. The legislative proceedings had faced multiple disruptions by opposition benches before finally commencing, centering squarely on the nationwide agitation and policy fallout stemming from the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak controversy.

Stepping up to address the House, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi threw his weight behind the nationwide student demonstrations. He characterized the youth-led movement as "a deep expression of the youth of this country" and a manifestation of "the future generation," asserting firmly that their actions mirrored neither anger, violence, nor hatred. Insisting that every citizen should feel a sense of pride regarding what young protesters achieved on public streets, Gandhi called upon political factions across the aisle—including members belonging to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)—to acknowledge and respect public sentiment. He went a step further, challenging ruling party leaders to ask their own children for their personal perspectives on the youth-led demonstrations.

Unpacking Youth Perspectives and Categorical Definitions
Transitioning into an analysis of how young minds perceive societal attitudes, Gandhi recounted an interaction he shared with an 18-year-old female student protester. According to his account in the Lok Sabha, the student outlined three distinct groups within society: "students," "idiots," and "andhbhakts (blind loyalists)".
Elaborating on the first archetype, Gandhi noted that the student defined an open, receptive mind as the core trait of true learning:
"She said a student is someone who has an open mind (and) an open heart. A student is someone who accepts that he does not know everything. Whatever he knows will be superseded by new knowledge. He knows the universe is dynamic. He also understands that knowledge is constantly changing. The most important quality, she said, that a student has is humility."
Building upon this framework, Gandhi detailed the second category of individuals who lack this foundational humility, explaining that the student referred to them as "idiots". He noted that "they are absolutely convinced that they know everything. They believe that the universe is static and they believe that knowledge emerges from inside them. They are arrogant. They don’t listen, they don’t respect other people’s truth. She said I call them idiots."
Addressing the final group, Gandhi shared his follow-up question regarding where the third classification belonged. The student's response, as quoted verbatim on the floor of the House, stated that "Andhbhakt is a person who is absolutely convinced that another idiot is God." Summing up the hierarchy, Gandhi reiterated that the spectrum consisted of students, idiots, and the andhbhakts who tail them.

Immediate Repercussions and Parliamentary Cleanup
The remarks instantly ignited sharp dissent from the treasury benches. Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju rose on a point of objection, contending that the opposition leader could not bypass accountability by shifting the wording onto a student. Rijiju maintained that "Had Rahul Gandhi not used the unparliamentary word, nobody would have objected. I believe that he is using a word in the name of a student, but it is he who is using it," while pressing for the expressions to be removed from the official record and accusing the opposition of side-tracking crucial legislative business.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh echoed these concerns, formally requesting the chair to expunge the unparliamentary terminology while urging absolute decorum from members to allow the speaker to be heard. Amid the rising din, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla directed Gandhi to confine his statements strictly to the legislative text at hand.
Clarifying that his assertions were not aimed personally at the government or individual MPs, Gandhi requested that the contested phrases be stricken from the record. Parliamentary proceedings subsequently verified that the specific terms had indeed been expunged. Although the administrative proposals offered up to a ten-hour window for debate on the anti-malpractice framework, the immediate fallout briefly overshadowed routine legislative duties before the House steered back to its core agenda.
