"दाल में काला": Outrage erupts over suspicious death of 17-year-old Karishma at Vijayawada madrasa; parents cite injury marks & foul play, officials find 100 KG of rotting meat on site, leading to immediate official scrutiny and public demand for justice

On the 28th of June, a tragic event unfolded at a madrasa in Ajit Singh Nagar, Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, where a 17-year-old girl named Karishma passed away under mysterious circumstances. This incident has sparked considerable outrage and unrest within the community.

According to the parents of the deceased, the circumstances surrounding their daughter's death are highly suspicious. They have pointed out that there were injuries visible on her body, raising doubts about the nature of her demise. They also highlighted a concerning delay, noting that they were informed about the incident a full six hours after it occurred, which has only added to their suspicions of foul play.
Contrasting with the family's claims, the administration of the madrasa has presented a different narrative. They suggested that Karishma's sudden illness was the result of food poisoning. Despite these claims, the unsettling details shared by the parents have fueled public speculation and demand for a thorough investigation.
Karishma hailed from Angaluru, a village near Gudivada in the Krishna district, and had been attending the madrasa for the past year to study Arabic and Urdu. On the fateful day, she reportedly fainted suddenly and was immediately rushed to the Government General Hospital (GGH) in Vijayawada, where she was unfortunately declared dead upon arrival.
The madrasa where this incident occurred is operated by a man named Syed Shahid Parveez, under the auspices of the Niswan Educational and Charitable Trust. The community and the family are now calling for transparent and swift action to uncover the truth behind Karishma's untimely death, as tensions in the area continue to escalate.
Following the unfortunate death of 17-year-old Karishma, the police registered a case of suspicious death under Section 174 of the CrPC. This procedural action took place after the body was transferred to the GGH mortuary. An investigating police official provided clarity on the steps taken, stating, "A suspicious death case has been registered, and the body was handed over to the family after post-mortem. The investigation is on."

The grief and doubts surrounding Karishma's death prompted her parents, Shaikh Mastan Bi and Maabu Subhani, to voice their concerns loudly. They expressed their suspicions of foul play by staging protests both at the madrasa and the GGH mortuary on the night of June 28th. During the protest, Karishma’s mother, Mastan Bi, firmly stated, "My daughter’s health condition was good, and she did not suffer from fever. Food poisoning was not the cause of death." She emphatically called for a comprehensive investigation to determine the true cause of her daughter's sudden death.
The incident swiftly garnered the attention of local authorities. Notable figures such as Vijayawada Central MLA Bonda Umamaheswara Rao, officials from the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC), and the police arrived at the madrasa to delve deeper into the case. The madrasa, currently under scrutiny, is an educational institution for 66 students who come from various districts including Guntur, Khammam, Krishna, and Eluru. The local community and authorities are now closely monitoring the ongoing investigation, seeking clarity and justice for Karishma's untimely demise.
While the madrasa officials maintained that Karishma's sudden illness was due to food poisoning, local authorities have not found any evidence supporting this assertion. The situation raised alarms as there were also reports of other students suffering from symptoms of food poisoning, necessitating hospital visits. An Andhra Jyothi report highlighted that approximately eight students had experienced similar health issues.
|
Further complicating the situation, it was revealed by NTR District Education Officer (DEO) UV Subba Rao that the madrasa had been operating without official authorization. This lack of oversight came into sharper focus as concerns about the facility's conditions grew. Despite the earlier health scares, District Medical and Health Officer (DM&HO) Dr. M Suhasini assured the public that the other students were now stable healthwise.
During a press interaction, Ajit Singh Nagar Circle Inspector, Guru Prakash, addressed the ongoing investigation into Karishma’s death, which remains shrouded in uncertainty. He noted, "the cause of Karishma’s death was unknown and the police were waiting for the RFSL report." After the necessary postmortem procedures, Karishma’s body was released to her family.
In a related development, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) conducted a raid on the madrasa. The officials discovered about 100 KG of rotting meat stored in the freezer, which had been neglected for several days. This finding led to further scrutiny, and the collected samples were promptly sent to a laboratory for thorough examination, aiming to determine any links to the alleged food poisoning cases.
