Tension erupts in Aligarh as ‘I Love Muhammad’ graffiti appears on walls of Hindu temples in Bhagwanpur and Bulak Garhi, sparking outrage, protests, and a massive police hunt for culprits

Communal tension gripped the villages of Bhagwanpur and Bulak Garhi under the Lodha police station area in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, on Saturday (25th October), after ‘I Love Muhammad’ graffiti was found painted on the walls of several Hindu temples.

As soon as locals saw the temple walls defaced with such offensive writings, anger spread rapidly across the villages. Many residents alleged that this was a deliberate attempt to disrupt communal harmony and create unrest among the two communities. Upon receiving information, police officials reached the site and ordered the immediate removal of the graffiti. However, locals strongly opposed this action, alleging that erasing the writings under police supervision amounted to destroying crucial evidence that could have helped identify the culprits.
Visuals of the incident revealed that the miscreants had misspelled the word ‘Muhammad,’ writing it as ‘Mumad’ and ‘Muhmad,’ suggesting a hurried or poorly planned act meant purely to provoke and offend.
Members of the Karni Sena, led by its national vice president Gyanendra Chauhan, soon arrived at the scene. They joined local villagers in protest, demanding the immediate arrest of the culprits and calling for stronger protection of Hindu temples. The Karni Sena members issued a warning to the authorities that if the culprits were not arrested within 48 hours, a major demonstration would be organized.

To prevent further unrest, a peace committee meeting was convened in the presence of the SP City and the Circle Officer (CO). Police teams were then formed to track down the accused using CCTV footage, mobile location data, and other technical evidence. Reports later indicated that two suspects had been identified by the police.
Speaking to reporters, Aligarh SSP Neeraj Kumar Jadaun confirmed that he had personally visited four vandalized temples across two villages and that the offensive writings had been removed. He stated that “a thorough investigation is being conducted into all aspects, and orders have been given to take strict punitive action against the accused involved in the incident.” The SSP further mentioned that police teams were in constant communication with villagers, and an FIR had already been registered in the case. He assured that the situation in the area remains under control and efforts are ongoing to maintain peace.

Condemnation and public outrage over police response
The desecration of sacred temple walls with communal graffiti is a grave insult to religious sentiments and social peace. Such acts are designed to ignite hatred and cannot be tolerated in a civilized society. Locals have rightfully condemned the act as an attack on cultural harmony and Hindu faith.
However, the police’s decision to erase the graffiti before collecting evidence has raised serious doubts about their intent and efficiency. Villagers have accused the officers of negligence, questioning whether this hasty removal was an attempt to downplay the incident. If these allegations hold true, it exposes a dangerous lapse in duty that could embolden future miscreants.
Law enforcement must not only bring the perpetrators to justice but also restore public confidence by being transparent in their actions. As citizens await results, one truth remains clear — those who target temples and faith for mischief must face the strongest legal consequences.
