"खेला होये गेछे": A closer look at the architects who made it possible, and exactly how the BJP went from zero seats to completely crushing Mamata Banerjee's TMC regime and winning the 2026 West Bengal elections in fifteen historic years

May 4, 2026, will permanently be etched into the archives of India’s democratic journey as a truly defining moment. On this day, the controversial "Pishi-Bhaipo" administration, led by Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee, finally reached the end of its political road. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) successfully conquered one of its toughest and most elusive political battlegrounds, securing the West Bengal state elections with a remarkably large and decisive mandate.

Looking at the official data published on the Election Commission of India (ECI) website, the numbers remain almost difficult to process. The BJP captured a staggering 206 constituencies out of a total of 293, pushing the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) down to a mere 81 seats. Adding to the shockwaves of this election, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee faced a bitter defeat in her own Bhabanipur constituency. Just ten years ago, political analysts would have dismissed such an outcome as a wild fantasy.
While it is a universal truth that no politician stays in power forever and the TMC’s decline was bound to happen eventually, the BJP’s spectacular climb from securing absolutely zero seats in 2011 to completely sweeping the 2026 Vidhan Sabha (Legislative Assembly) elections is a completely different narrative. This massive victory was not a stroke of sudden luck. It was the result of a grueling, fifteen-year project, constructed brick by brick by dedicated state presidents and relentless grassroots workers.
To understand this victory, one must look back at the 2000s, a period when the BJP’s footprint in West Bengal was practically non-existent. The party managed to win only 2 seats in the 2001 Vidhan Sabha elections, and by the 2006 state elections, they were reduced to 0. Their performance in national elections was equally disheartening. They won 0 seats in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections and scraped together just 1 seat during the highly contested 2009 national elections in the state.
During that same year of 2009, Rahul Sinha was given the responsibility of leading the West Bengal unit of the BJP as its President. He navigated the party through the massive political wave that brought Mamata Banerjee to power in 2011, an election where the BJP once again walked away with 0 seats. However, the political climate began to shift when Prime Minister Narendra Modi ascended to national leadership in Delhi in 2014. This national wave trickled down to Bengal. Under Rahul Sinha’s steady guidance, the BJP saw its state vote share jump significantly from 6.15% to 16.84%, although this only translated to a modest increase in their seat count, bringing them to 2 seats.

The true foundational shift for the party took root later in 2014 when Dilip Ghosh, an ideologue from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), was brought into the BJP and appointed as the General Secretary of the West Bengal unit. Ghosh possessed a highly distinct and rugged personality that immediately made him a focal point in the state's politics. He was the perfect counter-match to Mamata Banerjee’s famously aggressive political style. Outspoken and completely indifferent to the unwritten rules of political correctness, Ghosh had the nerve to look the dominant TMC right in the eye. His unapologetic attitude breathed new life and confidence into a party cadre that had been demoralized for years. Recognizing his impact, the central leadership promoted Ghosh to the President of the West Bengal BJP in 2015.
Ghosh led the charge during the 2016 West Bengal Vidhan Sabha elections. For the first time in the state's electoral history, the BJP managed to win 3 seats. While this number was far from a majority, a crucial foundation had been laid. The real fruits of this labor became glaringly obvious during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
In a stunning political leap, the party’s parliamentary seat tally rocketed from 2 in 2014 to 18. Simultaneously, the BJP captured an astonishing 40.6% of the total vote share. This represented an unprecedented shift in voter sentiment across the state. The message from the public was undeniable: the BJP was finally moving in the right direction. As the 2021 Vidhan Sabha elections approached, many political pundits were entirely convinced that the TMC era was coming to an abrupt end.
However, the 2021 results delivered a shock to many. While the BJP achieved massive growth by increasing its assembly seat count from 3 to 77, it still fell short of the required majority mark by exactly 71 seats. Recognizing the gap, the party's central leadership concluded that a strategic shift was necessary to push the battle to its final stage. They immediately deployed a two-pronged strategy.

First, Suvendu Adhikari was appointed as the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Vidhan Sabha. Adhikari brought a calm, highly strategic demeanor to the table, backed by unmatched grassroots popularity. Second, Sukanta Majumdar, a leader who shared the fiery and aggressive style of Dilip Ghosh, was brought in to serve as the new BJP State President.
Together, they approached the political battle against Mamata Banerjee with missionary dedication. They consistently spotlighted deep-rooted issues affecting various levels of society, from widespread unemployment to alarming demographic changes in the region. The party effectively mobilized social media networks to build public awareness and foster a genuine movement for change. All of these calculated efforts, combined with the general public’s growing exhaustion with the ruling administration, created the perfect launching pad for 2026.
This brings us back to May 4, 2026, a day that also witnessed Suvendu Adhikari defeating Mamata Banerjee in her own constituency of Nandigram. There is absolutely no doubt that Adhikari's immense personal popularity was instrumental in securing this massive mandate for his party, positioning him as the likely Chief Ministerial candidate for the new government. He has earned every bit of the applause for making what seemed impossible, a reality.
Yet, while Suvendu Adhikari successfully piloted the party to its 206-seat victory, history must remember that the concrete foundation was poured by Dilip Ghosh, whose leadership secured the 40% vote share in 2019 and the critical 77 seats in 2021. In the rush to celebrate today's winners, the architects who transformed the BJP into a household name across West Bengal must not be overlooked.
Ultimately, the intellectual elites and the "Bhadroloks" of Bengal—who had previously been hesitant to embrace the BJP due to years of relentless fearmongering by the TMC—began to witness the tangible good governance models executed by the Modi administration in other Indian states. A widespread public awakening, combined with accurate political messaging and a deep-seated desire to restore Bengal to its former glory, became the primary drivers of this transformation. This historic victory is the ultimate result of a unified, collective fight by the BJP leadership against systemic corruption, minority appeasement politics, and persistent attempts to erase the region's traditional Hindu culture.
