Former TMC MLA Humayun Kabir openly issued threats against the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, during an interview with Bangladeshi media channel ‘Face the People’. The controversial remarks surfaced only a few days after Suvendu Adhikari took oath as the Chief Minister on Saturday, 9th May, triggering sharp political reactions across the state.

During the interview with anchor Sahifur Sagar, Kabir spoke aggressively about his long-running political confrontations with Adhikari, both inside the West Bengal Vidhan Sabha and outside it. While recalling earlier confrontations, Kabir attempted to project himself as one of the strongest political challengers to the Chief Minister. In the course of the interview, he directly threatened Adhikari and said, “It was only Humayun Kabir who challenged Suvendu Adhikari both inside and outside the Vidhan Sabha. I had said that if you put your hand on any Muslim MLA, then I will thrash you.”

The remarks quickly drew attention because they were made openly on an international media platform and involved direct threats against the sitting Chief Minister of West Bengal. Kabir did not stop there and further intensified his statements during the discussion. Continuing his attack against Adhikari, he declared, “If Shuvendu touches any Muslim, we will beat Shuvendu too!”

The statements have now sparked political debate and criticism, particularly due to the aggressive tone used during the interview and the fact that the comments were delivered through a Bangladeshi media channel. Political observers have pointed out that such statements from a former legislator could further deepen tensions in the already heated political environment of West Bengal.

Humayun Kabir, once a prominent face in the Trinamool Congress, was suspended from the party in December after he proposed constructing a mosque in Beldanga, Murshidabad, modelled on the disputed ‘Babri Masjid’. The proposal had immediately created controversy in the state and drew reactions from different political and social groups. Despite being suspended by the party leadership, Kabir moved ahead with the foundation ceremony for the proposed mosque structure. Reports at the time suggested that the move had received support from sections of the local Muslim community in the Murshidabad region.

Following his fallout with the TMC, Kabir announced the formation of his own political outfit named the Janata Unnayan Party. Along with launching the new party, he also declared that he planned to contest the upcoming Assembly elections independently and build his own political base outside the Trinamool Congress.

Over the past several months, Kabir has also been attempting to create a broader Islamist political front in West Bengal aimed at challenging both the TMC and the BJP in the state’s political landscape. His efforts have largely focused on regions with significant minority populations, particularly in Murshidabad district. In recent elections, Kabir also secured victories from the Nowda and Rejinagar seats in Murshidabad, further strengthening his presence in local politics.
