KOLKATA — A major political controversy has erupted in West Bengal after a purported audio recording involving Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief and former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee went viral on social media. The leaked clip surfaced on Sunday, May 31, 2026, barely a day after her nephew and TMC National General Secretary, Abhishek Banerjee, was physically attacked by angry crowds during a visit to Sonarpur South in the South 24 Parganas district.

The double-barrel development—the street violence followed instantly by the late-night hospital drama—has quickly positioned itself as one of the most volatile political flashpoints in the state.

The Inciting Incident: Chaos on the Streets of Sonarpur

The entire chain of events set off on the afternoon of Saturday, May 30, 2026. Abhishek Banerjee, the Lok Sabha MP from Diamond Harbour, had traveled to the Sonarpur South area as part of a targeted statewide outreach initiative by the TMC. According to party representatives, the outreach was organized to boost the morale of ground-level party workers who had reportedly become victims of targeted post-poll political violence.

According to reports from the ground, Banerjee’s first destination was the household of Sanju Karmakar, a local TMC worker who was allegedly killed in recent post-poll clashes. The political climate deteriorated quickly as Banerjee left his main vehicle to approach the neighborhood on a motorcycle.

A substantial crowd of hostile local residents, many waving black flags, quickly swarmed the path. Protesters began chanting high-pitched slogans of “chor, chor” (thief, thief) directly at the TMC leader. Within moments, the demonstration escalated into an outright physical assault. The crowd threw stones, bricks, shoes, mud, and eggs toward Banerjee.

Visuals broadcast across local channels and documented by The Indian Express and The Quint showed an atmosphere of intense panic. Security personnel and TMC workers had to aggressively form a human wall around Banerjee to escort him out of the melee. Among the most striking visuals was the sight of Banerjee wearing a police-issued cricket helmet to protect his head from flying projectiles. His clothes were stained with eggs, his spectacles were smashed, and his shirt was visibly torn during the scuffle.

Despite the disruption, Banerjee managed to complete his brief meetings, including a subsequent stop in Beleghata to visit the family of Biswajit Pattanayak, another party worker who faced political targeting. Following his extraction from Sonarpur, Banerjee addressed reporters, laying blame directly on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for orchestrating the incident.

“It’s all BJP-sponsored. Look what they have done. This is their example of democracy. It hasn’t even been a month, and the police are nowhere to be seen,” Banerjee remarked, adding that the attack was a calculated attempt on his life. “They hit my eye with a brick, and I can't open my eye. He's punched me in the back, chest, arm, and leg... I was wearing a helmet, otherwise my head would have been split in two.”

From the Streets to the Wards: The Hospital Conflict

Following the physical trauma, Abhishek Banerjee was transported to Apollo Hospital along the EM Bypass in Kolkata for primary medical evaluation. According to official medical disclosures, doctors at Apollo examined the MP and found that his physical injuries were superficial, ultimately advising that he could be safely monitored and recover from home.

Dissatisfied with the medical assessment and alleging that appropriate care was being withheld due to external interference, former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee arrived at Apollo and personally directed that her nephew be checked out and shifted. The MP was moved via wheelchair to Belle Vue Hospital in central Kolkata late Saturday evening for advanced assessment.

At this juncture, Mamata Banerjee convened an immediate press conference to air major allegations against both political adversaries and law enforcement officials. She explicitly accused BJP leadership and a senior officer from the Kolkata Police—specifically the Deputy Commissioner of Police (South)—of actively badgering medical administrators to deny admission to the MP.

According to her brief, Abhishek Banerjee had developed internal blood clots because of the physical blows received during the assault. She pointed out that he was admitted directly to the Intensive Therapy Unit (ITU) of Belle Vue Hospital, where a medical team subjected him to a battery of high-level evaluations, including a 3D CT scan, an ultrasonography (USG), and thorough thoracic examinations.

Banerjee challenged the public narrative surrounding the severity of the MP’s state, questioning why medical authorities would assign an individual to an intensive care wing if the clinical condition was benign. She concluded by noting that while the MP would return to his private residence to continue treatment, specialized clinical gear, including oxygen cylinders, was being installed at his home under the supervision of personal family doctors.

The Controversial Leak: Confrontation Over Admission

The political temperature peaked on Sunday morning when West Bengal BJP spokesperson Debjit Sarkar and other opposition commentators circulated a mobile video and audio recording on social media platforms, as detailed by The Times of India. The clip captures a sharp, public verbal confrontation within the hospital corridors between Mamata Banerjee and Pradip Tandon, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Belle Vue Hospital.

The audio records the former Chief Minister reprimanding the medical administrator over the hospital’s documented hesitation to formally admit Abhishek Banerjee after their initial clinical findings showed no major internal injuries.

The conversation begins with Mamata Banerjee directly stating: “Sorry, Mr Tandon, you have done a wrong thing.”

As the exchange continues, her language turns significantly more severe:

“Please remember what help we have done for you. God will not excuse you. You are misleading. You should be ashamed. Everybody will remember your arrogance. You are running the hospital, and the BJP is in power. Tomorrow, if the central government is not there, we will take care of it.”

Political Fallouts and Public Debates

The leak of the audio file immediately turned into a primary talking point across the state's political landscape. Opposition representatives used the recording to accuse the Trinamool Congress chief of intimidation, claiming she used heavy-handed methods to force a private healthcare facility to modify its medical reports to align with a specific political narrative.

BJP leaders issued formal statements asserting that the incident was an attempt to weaponize medical institutions for political sympathy, pointing out that Belle Vue Hospital's official medical notes distinctly stated: "There is no serious physical sign of injury except for bruises on the chest. Patient is talking and is fully conscious and oriented. Hence, the patient does not require any admission."

Conversely, the incident drew condemnation from several national opposition figures. Leaders such as Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, and Samajmoodi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav expressed deep concern over the physical attack on an elected Member of Parliament, with Gandhi reportedly offering to help coordinate medical treatment outside of West Bengal if necessary.

As the audio continues to circulate widely online, the combined impact of the physical altercation in Sonarpur, the public dispute over hospital procedures, and the specific wording used during the confrontation with the hospital administration has created a significant controversy, deepening the existing political polarization across West Bengal.
