Ahmedabad: Police arrest Farhan and Faisal for attacking and threatening a school principal who went to inspect a Madrasa on NCPCR’s direction

In a recent development in Ahmedabad, the Daryapur Police have taken into custody two individuals, Farhan and Faisal, following an unsettling incident involving an attack and threats against a local school principal. This principal, Sandeep Patel, was performing an inspection of a Madrasa located in the Sultan Maholla area of Daryapur as per the directives of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR). The distressing event occurred on Saturday, leading to swift police action the following day.

The arrest was a direct response to the violent episode that unfolded when an Islamist mob targeted Patel, who was dutifully surveying the religious schooling facility. The mob's aggressive behavior resulted in immediate legal repercussions for the primary suspects involved.

Upon their apprehension, the authorities detailed that both Farhan and Faisal are scheduled for a court appearance soon. During this legal proceeding, the police intend to request their continued remand to aid the ongoing investigation. The focus of the inquiry now extends beyond these two individuals, as law enforcement officers are actively searching for other members of the mob who participated in the attack.

The backdrop to this incident is a broader initiative by the Gujarat education department, tasked with conducting comprehensive surveys of madrasas across the state. This initiative, stemming from an NCPCR order issued on the 18th of May, aims to scrutinize the educational standards and conditions within these institutions. The survey that led to the confrontation at the Madrasa in Sultan Maholla is part of this larger statewide effort to ensure compliance with national educational standards and child rights protections.

However, Sandeep Patel's experience during his survey of a madrasa in Daryapur's Sultan Maholla was disturbing, as he was unexpectedly assaulted by an Islamist mob.

Sandeep Patel, who is the principal of Shruti Higher Secondary School located in Bapunagar, was actively participating in a governmental effort to assess educational facilities within the area. On the morning of Saturday, 18th May, Patel attended a meeting convened by the District Education Officer (DEO), RM Chaudhary. Following the meeting, he received specific instructions to visit the madrasa associated with Saiyad Sultan Masjid in Sultan Maholla. His task was to gather comprehensive details concerning the institution’s student enrollment, teaching staff, residential facilities, and other infrastructural aspects.

Upon arriving at the designated madrasa at around 10:30 AM, Patel found himself facing an unexpected hurdle—the doors to the mosque were securely locked, preventing any immediate entry. Faced with this impediment, Patel promptly contacted a senior official to report the situation. Following the guidance of his superior, he used his smartphone to take a photograph of the mosque. This action was suggested as a precautionary measure to document the state of the madrasa at the time of his visit, especially since it appeared to be closed.

"I kept saying I came for government work, but they didn’t believe me," the victim narrates the incident, a stark reminder of the dangers that can accompany official duties.

Sandeep Patel, the principal from Shruti Higher Secondary School, provided a harrowing account of his ordeal, stating, “Suddenly, a bunch of people appeared from behind me and began asking me why I was taking pictures of the place. Before I could reply, five to seven unidentified males began punching me and hurled derogatory words to issue me death threats.” This sudden and violent outburst was unexpected and alarming, highlighting the risks faced by officials in sensitive tasks.

Amidst this chaos, the aggression escalated further. According to Patel, one of the aggressors in the mob took a commanding role, specifically instructing Farhan and Faisal to commit theft. "Meanwhile, someone from the mob shouted at Farhan and Faisal and directed them to snatch the mobile and documents from his hand and they took his phone during the scuffle," he recalled. This action not only escalated the situation but also resulted in the loss of important government property.

In an attempt to quell the situation and clarify his intentions, Sandeep reiterated his professional identity and purpose. “I told them that I was a teacher but they didn’t listen to me and continue to beat me,” he explained. Despite his efforts to communicate that he was there on official government work, the mob ignored his explanations and continued their assault.

The severity of the incident was compounded by the lack of intervention from bystanders. As Patel was being attacked, no one in the surrounding crowd stepped forward to assist him or halt the attack. This absence of intervention highlights a disturbing lack of civic responsibility among the witnesses.

After the distressing encounter, Sandeep Patel, the beleaguered principal, made his way directly to the nearest police station to report the incident. Reflecting on the gravity of the situation, he lodged a formal complaint against his assailants.

In response to Patel's detailed account, the Daryapur police took swift action. The complaint led to the registration of a criminal case against the identified perpetrators, Farhan and Faisal. The charges against them are severe, encompassing a range of offenses under the Indian Penal Code (IPC). These include unlawful assembly (Section 143), rioting (Section 147), voluntarily causing hurt (Section 323), uttering obscene words in public (Section 294(b)), robbery (Section 392), obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions (Section 186), voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty (Section 332), and criminal intimidation (Section 506(2)).

With the legal process set in motion, the Daryapur Police escalated their efforts to address this violent act. Subsequently, both Farhan and Faisal, the main accused, were arrested. Their arrest marks a significant step in the ongoing investigation as the police continue to delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding this violent episode. The community now watches closely, awaiting further developments in a case that has shaken the locality and raised concerns about safety and law enforcement responsiveness.
