"Haleluiah": In Kerala, Sibin, Ebin, and Justin from Kasargod arrested for using AI to create and distribute nude images of 150 women, including churchgoers, after stealing pictures of females from their village and surrounding areas from social media

In a distressing breach of privacy, three individuals from Kasargod district in Kerala have been apprehended for exploiting artificial intelligence (AI) to generate counterfeit nude images of more than 150 local women. The accused, identified as Sibin Lukose, aged 21, Ebin Tom Joseph, aged 18, and Justin Jacob, aged 21, were initially detained at Chittarikkal police station as reported by Onmanorama. Following their arrest, they were granted station bail.
These young men had been engaging in this reprehensible activity for approximately the last eighteen months. The doctored images were uploaded to a private Instagram account, which was specifically set up to be viewed by a limited circle of individuals. The Chittarikkal Station House Officer revealed, "They were booked under Section 67 (a) of the Information Technology Act for transmitting material containing sexually explicit acts in electronic form."
In a deeply unsettling continuation of the case, it has come to light that the perpetrators actively stole images from social media profiles belonging to women of their village and the surrounding areas. Using AI software, these images were manipulated to create inappropriate nude photographs. Additionally, for those women who did not post their pictures online, the accused resorted to using a digital camera to capture images, subsequently altering these as well.
The scope of this violation is vast, affecting at least forty female students who were contemporaries of the accused. The targeted group also disturbingly included devout women who attended church for Sunday prayers, highlighting the indiscriminate nature of the victim selection by these perpetrators.
The exposure of these deplorable actions occurred on the 11th of June. The breach was discovered accidentally when Sibin was visiting a friend's house. His friend stumbled upon a photograph of his own relative while browsing through Sibin’s phone, only to find that the device contained multiple explicit images of familiar women. Alarmed by the discovery, "The friend copied some photographs to his phone and approached his relatives and me," disclosed a Panchayat member and leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

It has been disclosed that Sibin and Ebin were primarily responsible for the creation of these manipulated images. They then sent these images to their associate, Justin. Prior to the arrival of law enforcement, Sibin and Ebin had deleted the images from their devices, but Justin had not taken the same precautions. He revealed, "We found photographs of around 40 of their schoolmates. They also clicked and used photographs of women when they came to church on Sundays, and when they climbed the hill here for the Way of the Cross procession on Good Friday."
In response to the escalating situation, the community leadership acted swiftly. "On Sunday (June 16), we organised an awareness meeting to discuss the matter. At least 210 people attended the meeting," added the CPM leader, emphasizing the community's proactive approach in addressing the distressing revelations.
The village is currently engulfed in anxiety following these revelations. The deputy superintendent of police (DSP) has offered reassurances regarding the ongoing investigation, stating, "We will protect the complainant’s privacy and investigate the matter." The police are hopeful that more individuals will come forward; already, four complaints have been registered. Additionally, the cell phones of the accused have been handed over to the Cyber Police for detailed forensic analysis, which is expected to provide further insights into the extent of the privacy violations.
As the Kasargod community grapples with the shocking AI misuse incident, further information has surfaced about the accused individuals. According to the panchayat member who filed the initial police complaint, there is a stark contrast in the backgrounds of those involved. Ebin, one of the young men implicated, failed to pass Class 12 this year. His co-accused, Sibin and Justin, earn their livelihood by cleaning private buses, indicating modest economic circumstances.
The seriousness of their alleged crimes has led to significant potential legal repercussions. They face severe penalties if convicted for their actions. "They might be sentenced to up to seven years in prison and fined Rs. 10 lakh if found guilty," the panchayat member disclosed.
