Tensions Flare in Bihar's Nawada: Procession Faces Stone-Pelting, Arson, and Vandalism Near Local Jama Masjid

What should have been a peaceful day of devotion took a chaotic turn on Saturday, March 28th, in the Nawada district of Bihar. As devotees participated in a Ram Navami procession, violence unexpectedly broke out in the Roh Bazaar area. Based on recent reports, the religious procession was making its way from the Lower Bazaar towards Durga Sthan. As the crowd navigated the street near the Jama Masjid situated in the Old Bazaar, they were suddenly met with a barrage of stones allegedly thrown by a Muslim mob.

The sudden attack triggered widespread panic, leading to a dangerous stampede among the participants. The situation quickly escalated as the aggressors also began targeting on-duty police officers with stones.

While the primary procession eventually managed to leave the immediate area, the unrest was far from over. About 500 meters away from the initial site of the conflict, a secondary wave of destruction swept through a nearby market. Rioters indulged in targeted vandalism and arson, setting fire to a tempo, a passenger car, and a handcart. The flames also engulfed approximately five local commercial establishments, which notably included a clothing store, reducing much of their property to ashes.

Law enforcement mobilized swiftly upon receiving distress calls. A heavy deployment of police personnel rushed to the scene to restore order. This emergency response was spearheaded by senior officials, including Superintendent of Police Abhinav Dhiman, Sub-Divisional Officer Amit Anurag, Sub-Divisional Officer Hulas Kumar, and Headquarters DSP Nishu Malik.

Thankfully, the authorities confirmed that the intense situation was eventually brought under control, and miraculously, no casualties were reported from the Nawada incident. In the immediate aftermath, law enforcement conducted extensive overnight raids across several locations in the district to apprehend the miscreants. However, formal charges have yet to be filed as the investigation continues.

Tragic Turn in Hazaribag Festivities: Two Lives Lost and Over 450 Injured as Ram Navami Processions Spark Clashes; Police Launch Probe

In a separate, profoundly tragic incident in Hazaribag town, the Ram Navami celebrations were marred by severe violence that claimed two young lives and left a staggering number of people injured early Sunday morning. The Times of India reported extensively on the unfolding of these devastating events, highlighting how disputes between rival groups entirely derailed the local festivities.

The victims were identified as 19-year-old Prince Kumar, a resident of Silwar village located within the Muffasil police station limits, and 20-year-old Abhishek Sharma from the Gwaltoli area of Bara Bazar.

According to ground sources, Prince Kumar was observing the lively processions at Jhanda Chowk at approximately 6:00 am. Tragedy struck when he reportedly stepped too close to members of an akhara (a traditional martial arts troupe) who were aggressively displaying their weapons. He sustained a fatal sword injury during the commotion. Paramedics rushed Prince to the Sheikh Bhikhari Medical College and Hospital (SBMCH). Due to the severity of his wounds, doctors referred him to a better-equipped facility in Ranchi, but he heartbreakingly succumbed to his injuries while in transit.

Earlier that same morning, around 2:30 am, the second victim, Abhishek Sharma, was also at Jhanda Chowk watching the passing floats with his friend, Rahul Kumar. Without warning, a group of young men confronted Abhishek and mercilessly beat him with lathis (bamboo sticks).

Recounting the horrific ordeal to the authorities, Rahul Kumar provided a chilling statement: “Bleeding profusely, we rushed him to hospital but he was referred to Ranchi and died on the way.”

The news of Abhishek's death sparked immediate outrage. Grieving relatives and angry family members staged a sit-in protest at Bara Bazar chowk, placing his body on the street and demanding the immediate arrest of the perpetrators. The tense standoff was eventually defused by Sadar Sub-Divisional Officer Aditya Pandey, who arrived at the scene and pacified the grieving crowd with firm assurances that the culprits would be identified and swiftly brought to justice.

Investigators are currently scanning local CCTV footage to piece together the exact sequence of events that led to the deaths of the two young men. Local sources indicate that the underlying cause of the widespread chaos was a heated altercation between two competing akharas over the right of way for their procession routes. What began as a verbal dispute rapidly deteriorated into violent clashes, intense stone-pelting, and the widespread destruction of vehicles, sound systems (DJs), and festive lighting equipment.

The human toll of this clash was immense. Dr. Abhishek Kumar, a practicing surgeon at SBMCH, summarized the devastating aftermath, stating: “More than 450 injured people received treatment at the hospital. Rest were treated at medical stalls set up by different NGOs. Seven were referred to Ranchi for better treatment.”
