"हिसाब सबका होगा": As West Bengal descends into post-poll chaos following a massive BJP victory, one worker is shot in Basirhat and bombs rock Panihati just hours after the brutal murder of Suvendu Adhikari's lead aide Chandranath Rath

The state of West Bengal is once again witnessing a surge in sporadic political unrest, a grim reality that has historically troubled the region during election transitions. Just hours after the tragic murder of Chandranath Rath—the personal assistant to senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari—in the North 24 Parganas district, another violent clash erupted. A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker, Rohit Roy, sustained a gunshot wound to his abdomen following an altercation with alleged Trinamool Congress (TMC) supporters in Basirhat.

The backdrop to this escalating tension is a massive political shift in the state. Recent election results delivered a crushing defeat to the ruling TMC, with the BJP securing a comfortable majority by winning 207 seats. Today marks the official end of incumbent Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s tenure. However, rather than paving the way for a smooth transition of power, top TMC leadership has reportedly sent confrontational messages, hinting at "fighting" the democratic mandate. Banerjee’s refusal to accept the electoral verdict and her public declarations refusing to resign appear to have inflamed tensions on the ground, instigating a wave of retaliatory attacks.
According to local reports and ground footage, Roy and several other BJP workers were in their local neighborhood installing party flags to celebrate their recent election victory. Their activities were abruptly interrupted when they were confronted by a mob of eight to ten individuals, who were identified by the victims as TMC supporters. The situation quickly deteriorated when three to five members of the opposing group allegedly drew weapons and opened fire, leaving Roy severely injured.
Roy was immediately rushed to the Basirhat State Hospital. Medical staff currently list him in a critical but stable condition. In a video recorded from his hospital bed as he received treatment, a conscious Roy recounted the terrifying ordeal, stating that he attempted to run for his life the moment the assailants began their attack.
Senior BJP figures, including Basirhat district president Sukalyan Baidya and leader Tanmay Mondal, swiftly visited the injured worker at the hospital. They demanded immediate accountability and stern police action against the perpetrators. While the BJP has heavily criticized the TMC for allegedly "sheltering" these attackers, local law enforcement agencies have initiated a formal investigation to verify the facts and bring the culprits to justice.

Explosives Thrown in Panihati
In a separate but similarly alarming incident late Wednesday night, terror gripped the Dutta Road area in Ward No. 2 of Panihati, also located in the North 24 Parganas district. Tensions in the neighborhood had already flared following the murder of Rath earlier in Madhyamgram.
According to reports from the Press Trust of India (PTI) and local sources, BJP workers were peacefully interacting with neighborhood residents near St. Xavier’s Institution. Without warning, a group of four unidentified miscreants arrived at the scene on motorcycles. Witnesses detailed how the bike-borne assailants hurled crude bombs directly at the gathering of BJP workers before immediately fleeing into the night.
Initial reports suggested three casualties, but authorities later confirmed that at least five BJP supporters were injured in the blast. The victims were rushed in critical condition to the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, where they are currently undergoing extensive medical treatment. Notably, the location of the explosion was in close proximity to the residence of Ratna Debnath, the newly elected BJP MLA and mother of the RG Kar Hospital rape victim.
Upon receiving distress calls, personnel from the Khardah police station, backed by central forces, descended on the location to secure the area and restore order. Heavy police deployment remains on site to prevent any further outbreaks of violence. The BJP immediately pointed fingers at the TMC, accusing the ruling party of orchestrating retaliatory strikes following their electoral defeat. The TMC has firmly denied any involvement in the bombing.
Addressing the media regarding the incident, a senior police official stated, "We have started an investigation and are examining CCTV footage from the surrounding areas to identify those involved. Raids are being conducted to nab the accused."
To ease the panic among residents, the official further assured the public by stating, "We are maintaining strict vigil and appealing to people not to spread rumours. Necessary steps are being taken to maintain peace,"'

Cycle of Retribution
These localized clashes are symptoms of a much broader wave of post-poll violence sweeping across the state as West Bengal transitions away from 15 years of continuous TMC rule to a new BJP-led administration. The violence has not been restricted to political workers alone. On May 5, several central force personnel and police officers sustained injuries from gunfire and pellets during severe clashes in Sandeshkhali.
The BJP leadership is treading carefully in the volatile environment. The party has expressed caution regarding "new recruits" who have recently defected from the TMC to join their ranks, raising concerns that some individuals may be exploiting BJP flags as cover to carry out personal attacks and violence. In response, the BJP has formally petitioned the West Bengal Police to arrest all perpetrators responsible for the unrest, regardless of their political affiliations. The goal, according to Adhikari, is to permanently dismantle the "politics of vendetta" that has plagued the state's political landscape for more than a decade.
Law enforcement is actively attempting to control the fallout. On Wednesday, Director General of Police Siddh Nath Gupta provided a comprehensive status report on the state's law and order situation. While acknowledging the severe nature of the recent attacks, DGP Gupta pointed out that several previously volatile regions—including Baruipur, Cooch Behar, and Asansol—were finally showing signs of relative calm.
In a massive crackdown aimed at thwarting further escalation, the police have registered over 200 FIRs connected directly to post-poll unrest. Consequently, 433 individuals have been arrested, while more than 1,000 others have been detained under preventive legal sections to stabilize the region during this turbulent political transition.
