"लम्बी है गम की शाम, मगर शाम ही तो है": Amrita Bose Gupta was dragged and her clothes torn as TMC goons cut power to seize Aranyaj School in Jharkhali, but the school was finally freed after BJP won the elections to serve the poor children

The shifting political tides in West Bengal have recently triggered consequences that reach far beyond the bustling state capital. The impact of the recent regime change is currently echoing deeply within the state’s most isolated rural communities. For many years, these quiet villages had been subjected to what locals describe as an unchecked reign of terror—a period where the dominance of ruling party officials went entirely unquestioned.
|
However, on the morning of Wednesday, May 6, 2026, a profoundly moving and unexpected scene unfolded in the Jharkhali area of the South 24 Parganas district. This event has reignited a long-lost sense of hope for justice among the rural population. Aranyaj School, a vital local institution dedicated to providing free education, was finally reclaimed after suffering under the illegal occupation of local Trinamool Congress (TMC) figures for nearly two agonizing years.
The path to reclaiming the school was anything but easy. Over the past month, as the state election cycle reached its peak, the brave administrators of Aranyaj School were subjected to a relentless barrage of death threats from local political operatives. Despite this severe intimidation, the school’s leadership stood their ground with remarkable courage. Their perseverance paid off, and the educational facility was successfully liberated. This victory for the community is particularly striking given that the local assembly seat—a Scheduled Caste (SC) reserved constituency in the Sundarbans region where the school is based—was actually won by the TMC candidate, Neelima.
The emotional weight of this liberation was captured in a widely circulated video on social media. The footage documented local residents, alongside the very children who had been barred from their classrooms, breaking the locks on the school gates. The facility had been unlawfully seized by local politicians since July 2024. The moment the heavy gates swung open, an overwhelming wave of relief and pure joy washed over the entire Parbatipur community. The children, who had been cruelly denied their right to an education and a promising future for twenty-four months, were seen with tears streaming down their faces. Their innocent smiles, which had been abruptly stolen from them on a dark morning two years prior, were finally restored.
To fully understand the gravity of this moment, we spoke with a representative of the organization behind the school. Providing crucial context to the establishment's history, Abhijit Mukherjee of the Aranyaj Group stated: “Started by Amrita Bose Gupta in 2023, this free English medium school was a centre for the education of poor children and the empowerment of women. In July 2024, it was snatched away by local TMC leaders. Now, after two years, there is an atmosphere of celebration throughout Parbatipur as the school has been reopened.”
This event represents far more than the simple recovery of a brick-and-mortar building. It stands as a profound victory for the fundamental ideals of accessible education and grassroots social empowerment—ideals that local enforcers had violently attempted to crush.

A Horrific Morning When Basic Human Decency Was Entirely Discarded
The grim details of the original takeover, meticulously documented in the First Information Report (FIR) filed by the school's manager, Amrita Bose Gupta, are harrowing enough to disturb the conscience of any civilized society. Aranyaj School, situated in Parbatipur and falling under the legal jurisdiction of the Jharkhali Coastal Police Station, was established in 2023 with a singularly noble mission: to deliver high-quality, English-medium education to impoverished children entirely free of charge.
According to the distressing account provided by Amrita Bose, the nightmare began just as the sun was rising on July 8, 2024. At approximately 7:30 a.m., while many residents on the school grounds were still peacefully asleep, a violent mob consisting of dozens of individuals descended upon the property. This aggressive raid was reportedly spearheaded by Dilip Mandal, the deputy headman of Jharkhali. Demonstrating a clear and calculated intent to hide their impending crimes, the attackers immediately severed the school’s main electricity supply and physically snipped the wiring of the CCTV security cameras, ensuring no digital record of their brutality would survive.
In her official police complaint, Amrita—who was living on the campus at the time—recounted how she and her dedicated team were violently dragged from their beds. The attackers hurled vile abuse at the educators and physically assaulted them to the point of tearing their clothing. In a deeply disturbing twist, the raiding party included several women who actively participated in the violence, viciously beating Amrita and her colleague, Upasana, and ripping at their garments. In a desperate attempt to halt the illegal eviction, Amrita produced official government documentation proving the organization's rightful allotment of the land. However, one of the primary accused, Parimal Mandal, callously snatched the official paperwork, tore it to shreds, and tossed it aside, demonstrating a blatant disregard for the law.
The mob's cruelty recognized no boundaries, showing zero compassion for either the very young or the elderly.
The violence reached a horrifying crescendo when Amrita’s young, 8-year-old son was violently hurled to the hard ground and subjected to a beating. Witnessing this atrocity, Amrita’s 65-year-old mother bravely intervened to shield her vulnerable grandson. In response, the attackers subjected the senior citizen to profound indignity by pulling down her nightwear. Even while partially unclothed and deeply humiliated, the elderly woman continued her desperate struggle to protect the child. The political workers callously kicked the elderly woman in her back repeatedly until the sheer physical trauma caused her to lose consciousness. Amrita herself was brutally shoved down a flight of stairs, where she, too, was left entirely unresponsive.

An Organized Robbery Unfolds, Transforming a Sacred Place of Learning
The intruders were not satisfied with merely violently evicting the rightful occupants; they proceeded to systematically pillage the campus. They ruthlessly stripped the facility of all resources painstakingly gathered over years of charitable effort by the Aranyaj Society for Educational and Environmental Development. A detailed inventory of the stolen assets clearly illustrates that this was not simply a politically motivated land grab, but a highly organized and calculated robbery meant to cripple the institution.
The Staggering Loss of School and Hostel Property:Educational and Technological Assets: The theft severely crippled the school's academic capabilities. Looters made off with an estimated 1,500 books from the library—a devastating blow to children with no other access to literature. Furthermore, they stole an LCD projector set, a complete public addressing system, two separate computer CPU towers, an Asus laptop, and critically important physical document files containing the school's administrative records.Energy and Infrastructure: Because rural areas often struggle with consistent power, the school had invested heavily in independent infrastructure, all of which was stripped. The attackers stole a solar inverter, two 160-watt solar panels, 8 ceiling fans, 4 table fans, 20 LED light fixtures, and 4 heavy-duty halogen outdoor lights, plunging the facility back into darkness.Furniture: The classrooms were left entirely bare. The thieves carted away 12 sturdy wooden benches, 40 plastic seating chairs, 2 large wooden desks, and several storage shelves.Hostel Furnishings: The living quarters dedicated to the volunteer teachers were not spared. Looters took 3 wooden bed frames, 20 warm blankets, 20 pillows, and 5 complete bedding sets, leaving the residential quarters uninhabitable.

The Brutal Theft of Opportunities for Local Women and Children
The tragedy of this attack extended far beyond the classroom. The overarching NGO also operated a sanitary napkin manufacturing unit on the premises, a vital initiative designed to foster self-reliance and financial independence for local village women. The mob showed no hesitation in dismantling and stealing this heavy, highly specialized machinery, which included:
- A heavy-duty 2 HP Pulveriser Machine and a specialized Wood Pulp Grinder.
- Three industrial UV Radiation Sterilisers capable of processing up to 2,000 napkins.
- A massive Ball press machine weighing 100 kilograms, along with 10 individual sealing machines.
- An inventory consisting of 600 packets of ready-to-distribute sanitary napkins and 200 kilograms of raw, unprocessed wood pulp.
The sheer scale of the theft also impacted the basic daily needs of the students. The looters emptied the storage rooms of 450 tailored school uniforms, 150 waterproof bags meant to protect books during the monsoon, and 150 traditional sarees. From the campus kitchen, they stole the entire food reserve intended to feed the children—100 kilograms of rice and 20 kilograms of nutritional pulses—and even hauled away the kitchen’s refrigerator. To compound the financial devastation, the attackers broke into the organization’s cash reserves, stealing ₹20,000 from the official safe and an additional ₹15,000 directly from Amrita’s personal handbag.

Influential Individuals Officially Listed in the Police Charge Sheet
In the immediate aftermath of the attack, serious and deeply troubling questions arose regarding the behavior of the local law enforcement. Even though Amrita formally filed the FIR the very next day, on July 9, 2024, the police demonstrated a distinct lack of urgency in apprehending the suspects while the previous government remained in power. However, the official charge sheet—meticulously compiled by Investigating Officer Priyanka Rooj (LSI)—eventually laid bare the identities of the perpetrators.
The primary individuals named in the official legal documents include:
- Dilip Mondal (identified as the Jharkhali deputy head and the alleged mastermind of the siege)
- Parimal Mondal
- Dhananjoy Mondal
- Saroj Chandra Biswas
- Apurva Roy
- Vishwajeet Bari
- Kishore Gayen
- Samir Mandal
Every single individual on this list was formally charged under a series of severe provisions within the Indian Penal Code (IPC). These serious charges included Section 329(4) for causing grievous bodily hurt, alongside Sections 115(2), 76, 324(4), 351(3), and 3(5). The investigating authorities officially filed this comprehensive charge sheet at the court of the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate located in Alipore. Astonishingly, despite the severity of the documented evidence and the formal charges, the political shield provided to these men allowed them to roam the streets with complete impunity for two full years.

A Complete Shift in the Situation After the New Government
The political landscape underwent a seismic shift with the conclusion of the 2026 assembly elections and the subsequent fall of Mamata Banerjee’s administration. This transition brought a sudden and much-needed restoration of credibility to the local law enforcement and administrative bodies. According to the residents of Parbatipur, the moment the political umbrella shielding the accused was removed, the unchecked arrogance of the local enforcers immediately evaporated. The school campus, which had stood as a silent, intimidating monument to fear for two years, is now once again filled with the joyous, echoing sounds of children playing.
Digital media has been flooded with heartwarming video clips showing local villagers working shoulder-to-shoulder with NGO volunteers to sweep the dilapidated classrooms and proudly hoist the Indian tricolor flag over the property. These visuals capture more than just a cleaning effort; they are a powerful, physical manifestation of a community finally releasing years of suppressed anger and reclaiming their dignity.
Amrita Bose Gupta Shares Her Terrifying Experiences Over the Last Month
In a detailed and exclusive conversation, Amrita Bose Gupta shed light on the intense pressures her team faced as the recent elections approached. She revealed that as the political climate grew increasingly volatile, the intimidation tactics utilized by local goons escalated dramatically. Amrita explicitly named a prominent local leader, Raja Gazi, as the primary architect operating behind the scenes, directing the illegal activities of Dilip Mandal’s gang, including the initial seizure of the school.
Amrita explained that in the early days of the occupation, it was unclear exactly who was pulling the strings and protecting the attackers from police action. Through quiet investigation, it eventually became apparent that Raja Gazi was the powerful benefactor. As of this reporting, law enforcement officials are actively hunting for him, and his arrest is considered imminent. She candidly admitted that for the entirety of the past month, every single person associated with the Aranyaj School lived under the constant, suffocating shadow of violence.
Despite receiving numerous, explicit death threats throughout April and early May, Amrita and her dedicated colleagues refused to back down. Channeling their trauma into action, they threw their full support behind the push for a new state government, campaigning tirelessly for the BJP. Amrita firmly believes that the liberation of the school is a direct consequence of this broader electoral shift. Even though the local constituency was retained by a ruling party candidate, the overall change in the state's leadership finally provided the community with the psychological safety and administrative backing required to break the locks on the school gates.
Looking ahead, Amrita stated that her immediate, overwhelming priority is the monumental task of rebuilding the institution from scratch. Because the academic calendar is already well underway, successfully reintegrating the children into a structured learning environment will be an uphill battle. She acknowledged that fully restoring the school to its former operational capacity will be a lengthy process. However, she remains fiercely optimistic, noting that the school will now rely entirely on the grassroots support of the community rather than seeking favors from any specific political entity. For Amrita, the guarantee of basic law, order, and impartial justice from the newly formed government is the only foundational support her organization truly needs to succeed.
The BJP Recognizes Amrita’s Battle and Shares the Liberation Video
It is a stark contrast in political approaches that while the long-entrenched local leaders seemingly dedicated their efforts to destroying a charitable educational facility, the newly victorious BJP openly validated Amrita Bose Gupta’s harrowing journey. The party's leadership took to their official X (formerly Twitter) platform to broadcast the triumphant video of the school being unlocked to a national audience. Amrita has publicly expressed deep gratitude for the vital moral and visible support she is currently receiving from the new administration.

Looking Forward to Fairness
While the physical grounds of the school have been reclaimed, the Aranyaj Society is now staring down a seemingly insurmountable mountain of logistical and financial hurdles. The critical questions remain unanswered: Who will provide financial restitution for the heavy machinery destroyed, the massive inventory of stolen educational supplies, and, most importantly, the two irrecoverable years of educational development stolen from the local youth? Amrita Bose Gupta has issued a passionate plea to the new authorities, demanding that they not only ensure the violent perpetrators face lengthy prison sentences but also actively facilitate the financial recovery of every single asset looted from the premises.
Amidst the complex, swirling political narratives dominating West Bengal today, the most poignant image remains that of the rural children tentatively stepping back onto their school grounds after a two-year exile. For twenty-four months, the very rooms meant to foster their intellect were violently padlocked, and the classroom walls intended to display their academic dreams were instead overshadowed by brutal partisan warfare. The community now watches with bated breath to see if Aranyaj School can fully resurrect its legacy—providing cost-free education to the marginalized, essential vocational training to vulnerable women, and serving once again as an unbreakable beacon of hope for the rural sector.
Ultimately, this harrowing saga establishes a critical benchmark for countless other districts across Bengal where essential public welfare initiatives and private lands have been swallowed by unchecked political greed. The hard-fought liberation of Aranyaj School sends an unequivocal message across the state: the abuse of political power has an expiration date, and the fundamental rights to justice and education will ultimately withstand the test of tyranny.
Today, the prevailing sentiment in the village is best summarized by the joyful declarations echoing through the newly opened gates. As the local children themselves proclaim: “We have our school back. Now we will study again.” This localized triumph may very well represent the crucial first step toward a much broader cultural and administrative renaissance across the state of Bengal.
