Shiggaon: Outrage Over Desecration at Historic Temple Complex Leads to Call for Bandh on August 26

Tensions escalated significantly across the town of Shiggaon in Karnataka’s Haveri district following an incident where an individual reportedly urinated within the sacred grounds of the historic Anjaneya Swamy and Banni Mahakali temple. The reported act has sparked widespread anger, prompting local community members and Hindu outfits to stage demonstrations and demand immediate, strict legal action against the perpetrator.

The event took place at the prominent temple complex located near the Shiggaon taxi stand. According to local eyewitnesses and residents, a youth identified as Zafar entered the temple area and allegedly engaged in the desecration. When several local youths noticed the act and confronted him on the spot, he reportedly responded with verbal abuse. In the immediate aftermath, gathered residents apprehended the youth and handed him over to the local police authorities, insisting that strict preventive measures and immediate legal consequences be enforced to prevent any recurrence of such acts.

The development has quickly become a deeply contentious issue throughout the region. Multiple Hindu organisations have strongly condemned the act, expressing deep grievance and accusing administrative authorities of showing laxity in safeguarding places of worship against actions that deeply hurt religious sentiments.

Sri Ram Sene founder Pramod Muthalik condemned the incident while addressing mediapersons in Shiggaon, demanding severe punitive measures against the accused. Questioning the administrative response, he asked what the societal and legal reaction would have been had a similar desecration occurred at a place of worship belonging to another religious community.

During his address, Muthalik directly questioned Shiggaon MLA Yasir Ahmed Khan Pathan, demanding a public clarification. Muthalik alleged that the accused had described the desecration as a “birthday gift” to the local MLA, insisting that this specific statement must be thoroughly probed by investigators. He further stated that the incident might not be isolated, calling for an expansive inquiry into potential links involving local political and religious figures. In addition, Muthalik raised allegations regarding individuals from Hanagal being unlawfully relocated to Shiggaon and registered as voters, urging officials to conduct a separate probe into the matter.

Directing his appeal to the district administration, the Sri Ram Sene leader urged the Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police to ensure that the accused is denied bail and subjected to a comprehensive investigation. In protest of the incident and to press for these demands, Muthalik announced a call for a total Shiggaon bandh on August 26, coinciding with Eid Milad.

The controversy has amplified broader demands among local residents for heightened security arrangements and surveillance around temples across Shiggaon, stressing that religious sites must be proactively protected to avoid communal flashpoints. Highlighting earlier unrest in Haveri district, Muthalik cited what he termed repeated attacks against the Hindu community, specifically referencing an alleged assault in Naregal village in Hanagal taluk during the Karahunnime festivities and the murder of a pan-shop owner, Shivajirao, in Rattihalli. Concluding his remarks, he questioned whether members of the Hindu community could live peacefully if such incidents continue without stringent deterrents, warning that Hindu organisations would intensify their demonstrations across the region.
