Will come up with new IPC, CrPC drafts soon: Home Minister Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Thursday that he is examining various suggestions received for improvements to the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and will soon come up with new drafts of both statutes in the parliament.

The Home Minister further said that he has taken out a lot of time for the same and is looking into it in detail, India Today reported.

"Various suggestions have been received regarding improvement in CrPC and IPC. I'm looking into it in detail, and invested hours in it. We will very soon come up with new CrPC, and IPC drafts in Parliament,” Shah said.

He was speaking at the inaugural session of the two-day Chintan Shivir of all State home ministers organized at Surajkund in Haryana.

In his address, the Union Home Minister also spoke about the government’s plan to set up branches of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in every State.

In May 2020, the Home Ministry constituted a 5-member committee to recommend criminal law reforms for India. The Committee is chaired by the Vice Chancellor of the National Law University, Delhi, Prof (Dr) Ranbir Singh.

When the Committee was formed, lawyers, former judges, and academicians alike had expressed concerns over its lack of diversity and transparency. In response, the Committee said that it respects all opinions and suggestions made to it and that it would upload all relevant updates on its website in the interest of transparency.
