"A Father's Fortitude, A Nation's Debt": In an epitome of stoic grace, Lachhman Singh Rathor embodies unparalleled sacrifice for his nation, his tale, reverberating with courage & loss, unfolds a solemn reminder of the spirit of a soldier's father
In a heartfelt account shared by Wing Commander Venky Iyer, we come face-to-face with a father who has bestowed an unparalleled gift upon his nation, his flesh and blood, offered up in the service of protecting the land they hold so dear. He notes, “He had given more to our country than all of us combined.”
Amidst a quiet congregation of mournful faces, a solitary figure stands out, a beacon of grace and fortitude in the face of unimaginable loss. Lachhman Singh Rathor carries the weight of his years with a quiet dignity, his presence both humble and commanding. As his gaze sweeps over the gathering, his eyes carry tales of jubilant days, lighting up with an undying flame of pride when his sons or his nation find a mention in conversations.
On this somber morning, the distant thud of helicopter blades breaks the stillness, bringing with it a father burdened with an unimaginable grief, yet standing strong, an embodiment of resilience and courage.
Wing Commander Venki Iyer had been the harbinger of the sorrowful tidings, his message to Rathor bearing the heartbreaking news of Flying Officer Vikram Singh's untimely demise, a message filled with deep regret and the pain of loss.
As the father of the departed brave soul, Rathor was stepping into a scenario painfully familiar, yet strikingly different, for the officer in charge, Venki Iyer. A moment that laid bare the harsh realities of service, where sometimes all that remains are cherished memories and tokens of a life that once thrived with vitality.
As Rathor descended from the helicopter, his frail yet determined figure became a center of reverence. His first words sought out Venki Iyer, a name often mentioned fondly by his son. In a calm and dignified whisper, he inquired, “Are you Venki, the Flight Commander?” Receiving an affirmative response, Rathor continued, “Vikram had spoken a lot to me about you. I’d like to talk to you when you are alone for a minute.”
Together, they walked to the periphery of the concrete platform, where Rathor expressed his wishes with astonishing clarity and strength, “I have lost my son, and you have lost a friend. I’m sure that you have taken every care in arranging the funeral and last rites. Please tell me when and where you need my presence and what you want me to do. I’ll be there accordingly for everything. Later, I would like to meet Vikram’s friends, see his room and, if it is permitted, visit his workplace. I then would like to go back home tomorrow morning.”
Iyer couldn't conceal his astonishment at the discerning directives issued by the grieving father, a beacon of clarity even in the face of deep personal loss. He realized, at that moment, a commander could not have provided clearer instructions.
As the day unfolded, the military funeral saw Rathor igniting the funeral pyre of his son, a sight that pierced through the toughest of hearts present there. The day faded into evening, an evening filled with shared memories and conversations that brought fleeting smiles amidst the lingering sadness.
Choosing to immerse himself further in his son’s last moments, Rathor spent the night in Vikram’s room, a personal space imbued with the essence of his lost child.
His journey of farewell continued into the next morning, a visit to the squadron area followed by a silent drive to the civil airfield, a final departure amidst words of reverence and awe from those who witnessed his unwavering strength.
As the car ferrying Rathor disappeared in the distance, Iyer couldn't help but share his admiration with his superior. They both agreed, Lachhman Singh Rathor was indeed a warrior, a father who had bestowed his nation with heroes, a living testimony to unmatched courage and sacrifice.
In this narrative, we find a stirring call to recognize the immense debt the nation owes to families like Rathor’s, families that have borne losses beyond measure, yet stand tall, embodying the true essence of patriotism and resilience.
Through this narrative, let's make a vow to acknowledge the real heroes, the families who have given everything in the service of their nation. Let their stories be a beacon of true courage, and let their sacrifices be etched in golden letters in the annals of our nation's history, becoming lessons of valor for generations to come.
